As all marketers know, the telephone can be a valuable tool for making sales and creating leads. However, the typical business owner seems to fail at using the phone to their advantage, taking them out of competition of phone sales.
And lets not forget about the challenge that voicemail creates. Some entrepreneurs never leave a voicemail, claiming that it would be a waste of time. Sometimes this is true, but if used correctly you can actually make a sale without talking to anyone live. If you follow some basic guidelines, this can almost guarantee an increase in your revenue. Not leaving a message will never create an opportunity.
After gathering results from more than 15,000 outbound calls, here are 5 suggestions presented by business know-how to think about next time you leave a voicemail while cold calling potential clients:
1. Use a script: Always have a script ready for if the person answers, and even if they don’t. Being prepared will keep you from suddenly “drawing a blank” or stumbling over your words. Just be sure to practice it a couple times before making your first call.
2. Keep it short: No more than 30 seconds.
3. Focus your message: What is the single most important element in your offer? Focus on that, rather confusing the client with several details. This will help keep your message less than 30 seconds.
4. Stay upbeat, confident, and professional: These tips can make or break the voicemail sale.
5. Don’t just say hi: give the potential client something to do, such as look at an email or brochure, or have them call you back. Even if its telling them to visit your website, make sure you leave them with some kind of quick “homework.”
